Oscar winner Helen Mirren has joined the cast of the comic book adaptation "Red" for Summit Entertainment reports Screen Daily.

Based on the series by Warren Ellis, Bruce Willis plays retired CIA agent Paul Moses who must fight a hit team sent by the new leader of the CIA (Morgan Freeman) who wants to clean up loose ends including eliminating old spies who know too much.

Though not specified, Mirren's role is likely that of Freeman's now-retired predecessor who lives in seclusion. The character is also the former handler of Willis' agent.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing. Filming kicks off this January in Toronto and Louisiana for release next Thanksgiving.
