Since winning the Critic's prize at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival and nine Mexican Academy awards for his first feature, Cronos,GUILLERMO DEL TORO has established himself among the most sought after international writer-directors.
A devotee of the gothic horror genre, del Toro followed Cronos with the environmental horror film Mimic, which he directed and co-wrote and stars Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin and Charles Dutton.
del Toro's most recent feature was the Spanish language gothic film, The Devil's Backbone, which stars Eduardo Noriega, Marisa Paredes and Federico Luppi. The film is a co-production with Pedro Almodovar's company, El Deseo and del Toro's company Tequila Gang.
Born in 1964 in Guadalajara, Mexico, del Toro received his degree from the University of Guadalajara. He trained with Oscar-winning makeup and special effects artist Dick Smith and later established his own special effects and makeup company, Necropolis, in Guadalajara. Early in his career, del Toro produced and directed extensively for television in Mexico. He created and directed numerous episodes of the Mexican television series, Televisa. In 1985 at the age of twenty-one he produced the feature film, Dona Herlinda and Her Son for director Jaime Humberto Hermosillo.
del Toro is developing future projects with such producers as Francis Ford Coppola and James Cameron. His next project will be Mephisto's Bridge based on the Christopher Fowler novel Spanky.
