|Genre: Drama, Comedy, Marriage|
Plot: When a Tokyo man's daughter gets engaged without consulting him, cultures and generations collide. In Ozu's first color film, all of his favorite characters are brought together in an affectionate and compelling tale of cultural and generational conflict within the struggles of a young girl and her father. The gap between old and young is played out as the daughter makes good on vows made with a teenage friend to protect themselves from the marriage schemes of their protective parents. The father, who dispenses parental wisdom to practically everyone, is rapidly unsettled by his willful daughter. The push and pull of traditional Japanese roles and Western influence, as well as the changing of ideas from generation to generation find an extremely comical and light expression in this gentle comedy of errors. Ozu’s static camera work, glacial pacing and vibrant color add a stunning aesthetic to this most Japanese of family dramas.
