MR. WONDERFUL was directed by Anthony Minghella, who also made the romantic comedy TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY. The film is the British director's first American production.

Screenwriter Vicki Polon scripted the semi-autobigraphical movie GIRLFRIENDS, and a second semi-autobiographical piece entitled HEARTS before writing MR. WONDERFUL. The film is loosely taken from her life; Polon told reporter Susan Shapiro that the script for MR. WONDERFUL draws on her father's attempt to marry off her mother in order to avoid paying alimony after their divorce.
