Underworld Reviews |
Underworld is an entertaining movie, if not incredibly original. We've seen a lot of this stuff before, but the director's style and vision, as well as some great lead performances, will be more than enough to keep you in the theater for this dark, action-packed thrill ride. [read review] --Brian Gallagher (MovieWeb)
The effects are pretty top notch, ... But other than that, the movie’s a complete stinker. It’s ugly, loud, filled with horrible dialogue and there’s not one shred of originality in this thing. It’s like Blade meets the Matrix, only without all the cool kung-fu, neat story or sense of humor. [read review] --Sonny Fernandez (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
Underworld. You've got to be sh*tting me. This is ass. It's a tool used by Satan to subdue and exonerate my ocular senses. There are huge chunks of exposition here that literally rendered me brain-dead. I blacked out, I spaced off. I just didn't care. [read review] --B. Alan Orange (MovieWeb)
Less MTV style flashiness and more decent storytelling and this would've been a fun ride; as is it's merely an okay ride that's mostly passable - let's hope the planned sequel is an improvement. [read review] -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
Though it sometimes feels as if it's four hours long, "Underworld" has going for it an intriguing fantasy premise, an eventful plot and a look that is diverting, if finally a bit monotonous. [read review] --Jonathan Foreman (New York Post)
It's a bloody, ultraviolent, profane psychological thriller that is probably trying to be ''Pulp Fiction'' and in the attempt proves just how brilliant ''Pulp Fiction'' was. [read review] --Anita Gates (The New York Times)
I kind of get the feeling I liked this more than most will including the fans of the genre. Partly because in my heart I love trashy things and "Underworld" is trashy. [read review] --Garth Franklin (DarkHorizons)
This isn't so much a review as a precaution, as there is a lot to enjoy about Underworld if your expectations aren't aimed too highly, or geared toward anything new. [read review] --Christopher Monfette (MovieWeb)
By any reasonable standard, this dark vampire epic -- all massive overacting, cologne-commercial design and sexy cat suits -- sucks. But at least it gives a crap. [read review] --Andrew O'Hehir (Salon)
Fans of Blade and other gloomy, bloodthirsty action movies will probably be entertained. Underworld captured my attention sporadically, but not consistently. [read review] --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
A good watch for both horror and action fans. Doesn't slow down on the action and keeps you interested from the start. Check this baby out. [read review] 8/10 --FrighT MasteR (UHM)
It's so impossible to care about the characters in the movie that I didn't care if the vampires or werewolves won. [read review] --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
This film has many really cool ideas and moments, but sadly almost none of these ideas come into full frutation. [read review] 5/10 --'Greg C.' (Movie-Vault.com)
Vampire fans would be better off picking up the poster, staying home, and imagining their own flick. [read review] --Jeffrey M. Anderson (San Francisco Examiner)
A bit hairy. A bit long in the tooth. But original enough to make it a thoroughly enjoyable effort. [read review] --Derek May (MovieWeb)
I have never witnessed a film with such a cool premise and epic scale end up as such a dull affair. [read review] --Mike Pereira (Bloody-Disgusting.com)
The movie is stylish and cruel, and mightily entertaining for certain covens out there. [read review] --Jami Bernard (New York Daily News)
"Underworld" could use script transfusion, or at least a few quarts of levity. [read review] --Peter Hartlaub (San Francisco Chronicle)
