Writer-director Nora Ephron hit a low point with this disappointingly dreary comedy set in a suicide clinic on Christmas Eve. The joke is supposed to be that all of the crisis counselors are themselves a pack of lovable losers, led by a badly toupeed Steve Martin. But it's a short step from lovable loser to annoying dweeb and most of the people in this movie cross that line very quickly. It's too bad, because the cast includes Madeline Kahn, Robert Klein, Rob Reiner, Garry Shandling, and Adam Sandler. Somehow, Ephron manages to restrain this lineup from doing anything funny. --Marshall Fine

It's Christmas Eve at Lifelines, a Venice Beach suicide hotline. Philip (Steve Martin), the manager, has just been informed by the landlord that the they are being evicted and suddenly business around the office seems as crazy as the callers who are clogging the lines! Over one night, the offbeat characters around the office and in the neighborhood--from timid Catherine (Rita Wilson), to rapping Mrs. Munchnik (Madeline Kahn), to pregnant Grace (Juliette Lewis), to cross-dressing Chris (Liev Schrieber)--will all learn that Christmas can be a happy time regardless of your mental state. Director Nora Ephron (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE) co-scripted this quirky holiday comedy with sister Delia.

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, the only creatures stirring were a transvestite, a homicidal Santa, a serial killer, the staff of a suicide hot line and a very crazy pregnant woman.
From the director of Sleepless In Seattle comes a hilarious comedy about life, death and fruitcakes. Funny man Steve Martin leads an all-star cast in this cracked up comedy about a suicide hotline where the only people crazier than the clients are the ones answering the phones.
