Plot: The story of Stanley Yelnats (SHIA LaBEOUF) – an unusual young hero, dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse. Perpetually in the wrong place at the wrong time, Stanley is unfairly sentenced to months of detention at Camp Green Lake for a crime he didn’t commit. There, he and his campmates – Squid, Armpit, Zig Zag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero – are forced by the menacing warden (SIGOURNEY WEAVER) and her right-hand men Mr. Sir (JON VOIGHT) and Mr. Pendanski (TIM BLAKE NELSON) to dig holes in order to build character. Nobody knows the real reason they’re digging all these holes, but Stanley soon begins to question why the Warden is so interested in anything "special" the boys find. Stanley and his campmates must stick together and keep one step ahead of the Warden and her henchmen as they plot a daring escape from the camp to solve the mystery and break the Yelnats family

Aided by Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight as evil grown-ups, this adaptation of the beloved children's book crackles with un-Harry-like life.--Laura Miller (Salon)
Sporting a ridiculous toupee and speaking with a Southern accent, Voight's over-the-top performance is probably the most enjoyable aspect of Holes - an otherwise unmemorable kids flick. --David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)
If the law required kids' movies to be simple enough for nippers to get the gist of them in a single sentence, Holes would be looking at a long stretch behind bars. --Jamie Russell (BBC Films)
Funny, inspiring and just a little bit naughty, Holes is excellent family entertainment. 77/100--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
Hole-ly original, hugely enjoyable film, based on Louis Sachar’s best-selling children’s novel – coupling a great script with some superb performances, this could be one of the surprise hits of the year. --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
Rarely have I enjoyed a kiddy-flick so much - this is a movie every member of the family, young or old, will be able to get involved in. One of the best movies of 2003. 8/10--Gary Panton (Movie Gazette)

This is a unique and offbeat kids' movie, which has some fun for the adults as well. It doesn’t treat kid like children, some of the time. The acting is great all around. The films suffer a little in the technical department from over used editing technique and sloppy CGI. B--Michael Miecielica (MovieJustice)
