It's 1962 and 15-year-old horror film fan Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton) is the new kid in a small Key West town; the Cuban Missile Crisis is happening in his own backyard; an intriguing girl (Lisa Jakub) is actually looking his way, and best of all, master showman Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) is in town promoting his latest sci-fi horror flick. Gene and his friends eagerly gather at the local theater for the debut of MANT!, a terrifying tale of one man's mutation into a demonic ant. At the theater they experience the thrill of a lifetime, as the threat of nuclear war looms overhead. John Goodman is at his uproarious best as the larger-than-life horror promoter who revels in the creation of one-of-a-kind shock and terror as the nation waits for its fate to be revealed. MATINEE is a masterful homage to B-movie science fiction classics of the 1950s and '60s that ingeniously combines science fiction shock and suspense with the real life horror of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Lawrence Woolsey presents the end of civilization as we know it. Make that...
John Goodman is at his uproarious best as the gregarious creator of sci-fi thrillers, circa 1962, who brings his unique brand of showmanship to the unsuspecting residents of Key West, Florida.
Fifteen year-old horror fan Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton) who can't wait for the arrival of filmmaker Lawrence Woolsey (Goodman), who is in town to premiere his latest offering of atomic power gone berserk, "Mant." But the absurd vision of Woolsey's take takes on a sudden urgency as the Cuban missile crisis places the real threat of atomic horrow just 90 miles off the coast.
With the help of Gene and his high school friends, along with Woolsey's leading lady, Ruth (Cathy Moriarty), the master shwoman gives Key West a premier they'll never forget. The screen explodes in "Atomo-Vision," the theatre rocks in spine-tingling "Rumble-Rama," and a local hood threatens to run off with Woolsey's profits. It all seems fitting in this entertaining tale of backyard bomb shelters, missle attack drills and innocence clouded by the threat of nuclear distruction.
