One night he saw Matilda and, though he managed to escape her evil clutches, his mother was brutally murdered. Or was it just a hallucination? Haunted by his painful memories of that night, and plagued by guilt, Kyle (Chaney Kley) has never allowed himself to be in the dark since. One day, he is summoned back to town by his childhood sweetheart Caitlin (Emma Caulfield), whose nine-year-old brother Michael (Lee Cormie) is having the same nightmares that drove Kyle to the brink of madness. How low have horror films sunk? Well, this one stars the Tooth Fairy. Thing is, it's actually kind of scary.--Andrew O'Hehir (Salon)
"Darkness Falls" isn't scary, it's stupid. All of the scares are synthetic and the jumps are cheap. Most cheap scares are expected in movies like these, but "Darkness Falls," and give 'em credit for it, took it to a new level. 4/10--Scott Spicciati (Movie-Vault.com)
Though Darkness Falls isn't anywhere close to as frightening as last year's The Ring or Signs, it's certainly a continued step in the right direction for the horror genre. --David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)
A cheap, uninspired attempt at the horror film genre which the studio hopes to create a franchise out of. --Brian Balchack (MovieWeb)
This is a self-consciously silly, completely disposable multiplex movie that does its best to deliver its fair share of chills while struggling to keep a straight face. --Jamie Russell (BBC Films)
There isn’t a character that changes in any way during the proceedings – unless you consider being lopped into bits by an angry spirit to be character development. 58/100--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
Filled with plot holes, bad dialogue, very little tension, a few "boo" scares and an idiotic town of people, the only scary thing about this movie would be the price of any admission to go see it. 4/10--'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
Disappointing horror film that is neither frightening nor amusing – bad acting, sub-standard special effects, terrible script. And not in a good way. --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
Plenty of screaming and shrieking, but very little substance. 4/10--Gary Panton (Movie Gazette)
It's not bad but it's not spectacular; however it is steadily directed, has a pretty cool last third and is acted fine. If you put your brain in check and lower your expectations you'll probably enjoy this decent horror flick. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
There's some great action at the end, and the spooky beginning, but aside from those two pluses, there's precious little to recommend here.-- (eSplatter.com)
