In 1994, ROGER ALLERS (Director) earned a place in animation and film history with the release of the Academy Award®-winning blockbuster, The Lion King. The film, which marked his directorial debut, became a worldwide box office sensation. Following the film’s success, Allers adapted its screenplay for the stage in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical production of “The Lion King.” For his work, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
Allers’ association with The Walt Disney Company dates back to 1986 and he is acknowledged as one of the major creative architects in the resurgence of animation at Disney. In addition to directing The Lion King, Allers worked on a number of other Disney projects in various capacities. He served as story supervisor on the Best Picture Academy Award® nominee Beauty and the Beast. Additionally, he received story credits on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Oliver & Company.
Inspired by Disney’s Peter Pan, Allers began studying animation at a very young age. While attending Arizona State University, he turned his attention to drawing and painting. After graduation, he spent two years traveling Europe and lived for a time in Crete. Returning to the United States and settling in Boston, Allers revived his interest in animation at Harvard. In a key creative position with Lisberger Studio, he spent five years working on a number of projects and then relocated with the studio to Los Angeles to develop Disney’s Tron. He subsequently spent two years in Canada as an animator on Nelvana’s Rock and Rule and two more years in Japan as an animation director on Little Nemo.
