Synopses for The Invisible Circus (2001)
1.

An affecting movie about ghosts and illusions, The Invisible Circus follows Phoebe (Jordana Brewster), an American girl who's retracing the path of her sister Faith (Cameron Diaz), hoping to discover what led to Faith's mysterious death. Using the postcards that Faith sent her from Europe as a map, Phoebe travels from Amsterdam to Paris to Portugal, learning from Faith's ex-boyfriend Wolf (Christopher Eccleston) about a side of Faith that Phoebe knew nothing about--a side that overturns all of Phoebe's cherished beliefs about her sister and herself. The performances in The Invisible Circus are uneven, and yet the culmination of the movie captures something piercingly sad, something acute and evocative about how survivors create myths about the lost, myths that can both help and hinder their lives. Blythe Danner plays the mother of the two girls in a brief but subtly powerful performance. --Bret Fetzer

2.In THE INVISIBLE CIRCUS, sixties idealism meets headlong with family conflict and, mysteriously, death. This compelling drama, based on Jennifer Egan's novel, begins in the infamous Summer of '69, when radical hippie Faith O'Connor (Cameron Diaz), and her English boyfriend Wolf (Christopher Eccleston) take off for Europe, feeling that they will change the world for the positive. Faith diligently writes postcards to her younger sister Phoebe (Jordana Brewster). When they suddenly stop, the next Faith's family hears of her is that her body has been found at the bottom of a cliff outside a tiny Portuguese fishing village, the victim of an apparent suicide. Seven years later, Phoebe, a haunted, introverted teenager, still doesn't believe her adventurous, life-loving sister would have taken her own life so, against the wishes of her protective mother (Blythe Danner), Phoebe decides to retrace Faith's journey across Europe, using the postcards she had received from Faith as her only clues to a growing mystery. From a houseboat in Amsterdam to a flat in Paris, Phoebe follows Faith's footsteps right to the end. Along the way, she finds Wolf married and settled into a life of bourgeois complacency, one of the many twists in this chilling, engaging story.

3.  All they wanted was to change the world... instead they changed each other.

Jordana Brewster, Christopher Eccleston, and Cameron Diaz star in this seductive drama about a young woman's quest to uncover the truth behind her sister's mysterious death.

They are two sisters as different as night and day. Faith (Diaz) is beautiful, free spirited and eager to change the world. Her younger sibling Phoebe (Brewster) is more cautious and guarded- until Faith's untimely death in Europe launches her on a bold journey that would change her forever. Tracing Faith's steps from Amsterdam to Paris to Portugal, she encounters Wolf (Eccleston), her sister's ex-boyfriend. Equally haunted by Faith's hold on his past, Wolf joins her and what begins as a casual friendship gives way to a passionate affair that "casts a net of erotic suspense."
