HENRY AND JUNE was the first film to feature the new NC-17 MPAA rating, which replaced the old X rating. The rating change followed a year of controversy after a number of major independent releases received the X rating. Despite serious and artistic intentions and critical acclaim, many films were affected by this, including THE COOK, THE THIEF, THE WIFE, AND HER LOVER; HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER; and TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN! The X still signified low-class sleaze to most, thereby limiting the number of theaters that would book the film and the number of television stations and newspapers that would carry advertising.
