Plot: Carnival of Souls has gained a strong cult reputation over recent years. Directed and produced by Harold “Herk” Harvey, it has an intriguing power, mixing ordinary people and everyday situations with the extraordinary and the supernatural. Made in Lawrence, Kansas in 1962, the film centres on Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss), who apparently survives a serious car accident. Shortly after, she heads for Utah and a new job as a church organist, but is pursued by a cadaverous phantom figure played by Herk Harvey. While a lot of today’s horror films rely heavily on special effects, Carnival of Souls does not. Its magic lies in its tense atmosphere, crisp photography, and frighteningly real characters.The first feature from Harvey, who had previously made industrial and promotional films for the Centron Corporation in Lawrence, Kansas, CARNIVAL OF SOULS developed a cultlike following despite being rarely screened for nearly thirty years. The TWILIGHT ZONE-esque tale of a woman who is in a car crash, only to find herself being pursued by spirits, the film's strength is its ability to sustain a very disturbing atmosphere with little more than some makeup, an eerie organ score and spare black-and-white photography. Low-budget cult classic is pretty muted and slower-paced but is well-directed by Harvey with some eerie moments scattered throughout.  -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)

The interesting thing about “Carnival of Souls” is how director Harvey interjects the creepiness into everyday small-town life.
