Director Gus Van Sant, premiere auteur of low-budget cult classics "Mala Noche," "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho," adapted this film from Tom Robbins's novel of the same name. Made on a budget of $7.5 million, "Cowgirls" was going to be a major studio project, but Tristar backed away from the picture and gave Fine Line Features the greenlight to buy it.
