Adam Sandler fans will find the animated movie 8 Crazy Nights to be another flowering of Sandler's absurdist goofiness. People who find Sandler completely annoying will be triply annoyed by 8 Crazy Nights, because Sandler does the voices for three different characters: Davey Stone, a boozing, belching, self-loathing loser who hates the holidays; Whitey, a tiny old man who tries to rehabilitate Davey; and Eleanor, Whitey's neurotic twin sister, who seems not to have left her house in years. Fans will find the slapdash musical numbers and scatological humor hilarious; foes will find them tiresome and banal. But even Sandler's advocates won't care about the by-the-numbers plot of holiday redemption; you see, Davey's parents died on the first night of Hanukkah, and he just needs to cry about it. Sandler's best when he's walking that line between stupid and smart-ass. When he gets sentimental, it's trouble. --Bret Fetzer

Adam Sandler and director Seth Kearsley present an animated Hanukkah tale with ADAM SANDLER'S EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS. Davey Stone (Sandler) is lurching down a wayward path. He's a drunk and aging delinquent, infamous in Dukesberry for spreading misery as deftly as he belches full sentences. He's facing prison when Whitey Duvall (Sandler again), a lovable, physically challenged man, proposes that Stone work with him at the community center as a referee for the local basketball league. The surly Stone accepts the job, and moves in with Whitey and his twin sister, Eleanore (also voiced by Sandler). But the true test is whether Stone can rise above his self-destructive habits in order to reunite with his former girlfriend, Jennifer (Jackie Titone), and act as a role model for her young son, Benjamin (Austin Stout).
The snow-covered landscapes in EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS have a pleasing, three-dimensional realism that's as cheerful as a Hallmark holiday card. Sandler, with his wide range of inane, high-pitched voices, is as funny as ever, punctuating the innocent world of EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS with the refreshingly irreverent brand of humor he displayed in HAPPY GILMORE, THE WEDDING SINGER, and BIG DADDY. Though the film isn't really for kids, Sandler and Kearsley manage to make even the more daring animated characters--like one with three breasts--seem harmless. EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS also features the voices of Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and Tyra Banks.

Antagonizing protagonist Davey Stone (Adam Sandler) is a young man who hates the holidays and is determined that no one else in the town of Dukesberry is going to enjoy them either.
On the first night of Hanukah, the perpetually grumpy Davey goes on a rowdy rampage and is arrested. Since this is hardly the first time he’s gone on a destructive binge, the town judge sentences Davey to ten years in prison. It is only through the intercession of a kindly old codger named Whitey (also voiced by Sandler) that Davey is spared. Whitey, a local basketball ref, agrees to take responsibility for Davey, who is hilariously ungrateful. Though Whitey suffers Davey’s foul temper and bad attitude with good humor, others are less sympathetic, particularly his childhood sweetheart Jennifer, who has just returned to Dukesberry with her son, Benjamin.
When Davey’s mobile home burns down, he is forced to move in with Whitey and his kvetchy sister, Eleanor (also voiced by Sandler). The familial atmosphere softens Davey somewhat until they tap into his painful past. He turns on Whitey and Eleanor, and goes off on a boisterous tear. It is only by confronting the ghosts of holidays’ past, and an act of selfless kindness, that Davey is able to overcome his demons and enjoy the holidays again.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah to all!
