Mel Gibson in Chicken Run (2000)

MEL GIBSON (Rocky) is a worldwide box office favorite, who has been honored for his work on both sides of the camera. He won dual Academy Awards® for Best Director and Best Picture for the epic drama "Braveheart," in which he also starred as William Wallace. Gibson also earned Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for Best Director for the film. The following year, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Ron Howard's "Ransom." More recently, he starred opposite Danny Glover in the last installment of the hugely popular "Lethal Weapon" franchise. In addition to "Chicken Run," Gibson also stars this summer in Roland Emmerich's Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot," and is currently filming "What Women Want."

Born in upstate New York and raised in Australia, Gibson attended the National Institute of Dramatic Arts at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He first gained worldwide attention when director George Miller cast him in the title role of the apocalyptic actioner "Mad Max." He then took on a decidedly different title role as a mentally challenged young man in love with an older woman in "Tim," which brought him Best Actor honors from the Australian Film Institute (AFI).

Gibson's status as an international star became more firmly established with the two hit sequels to "Mad Max": "The Road Warrior" and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." In 1981, he gained widespread acclaim, as well as a second Best Actor Award from the AFI, for his performance in Peter Weir's "Gallipoli." He reunited with Weir in 1982 for "The Year of Living Dangerously," for which Gibson garnered another AFI nomination for Best Actor.

After starring with Anthony Hopkins in "The Bounty," Gibson made his American film debut in "The River," opposite Sissy Spacek. He went on to star in "Mrs. Soffel," "Tequila Sunrise," "Bird on a Wire," "Air America," the animated musical "Pocahontas," and "Conspiracy Theory," with Julia Roberts. He also starred in the title role of "Hamlet," directed by Franco Zeffirelli, which was the first film under Gibson's Icon Productions banner. He has since starred in the Icon Productions "Forever Young"; "The Man Without a Face," which also marked his film directorial debut; "Maverick," opposite Jodie Foster; and, most recently, "Payback."
