NICHOLAS HYTNER (Director) earned a reputation as one of Britain's most highly praised theater directors before turning his attention to motion pictures. Hytner was born in Manchester and educated at Cambridge University. His first theater productions were in Exeter, Leeds and at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. He has directed three productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, "Measure for Measure," "The Tempest" and "King Lear." His six productions for Britain's National Theater have included the premieres of "Ghetto" by Joshua Sobol, "The Madness of King George III" by Alan Bennett and "The Cripple of Innishmaan" by Martin McDonagh. In New York, Hytner has directed "Miss Saigon" and the Lincoln Center Theater productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" and Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." "Carousel" was honored with five Tony Awards, including one for Hytner as Best Director. Hytner's first feature film, "The Madness of King George," received four Academy Award nominations. He then directed Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," starring Daniel Day Lewis, Paul Scofield, Joan Allen and Winona Ryder. His film "The Object of My Affection," with a screenplay by Wendy Wasserstein, was released in 1998. Hytner has directed operas in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva, Munich, Chicago and Moscow. In the autumn of 1999, Hytner returned to London to direct Alan Bennett's play "The Lady in the Van."
