STEVE CARR Top-tier video director making his feature film directorial debut in Next Friday, Carr is the mastermind behind many of contemporary music’s most powerful images and story-telling themes. Ice Cube first took notice of Steve Carr through his work with such artists as Method Man, Def Squad, Timberland, Redman, and most recently, rising superstar Jay-Z "Can I Get A," from the hit feature Rush Hour, and "Hard Knock Life." Carr, who attended Manhattan's School of Visual Arts on a full scholarship and trained as a painter, started out in the business designing album covers for Def Jam Records. His work included packaging for Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Mary J. Blige and the Notorious BIG. It didn't take long for Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons to allow Carr to break into the video director ranks. He has since become affiliated with Villains, the L.A.-based production house alongside filmmakers such as the Coen brothers, Brett Ratner, Abel Farrar, Ken Fox and the Pate brothers. It was no surprise that Carr would parlay into feature films and “Next Friday” was the perfect transition.
