After winning the National Film Institute's Award for Best student Film, filmmaker Nick Chapman (Kevin Bacon) jumps headlong into the Hollywood fast-lane. There, he receives a warm welcome from studio executives who have heard he's hottest thing in town. But before long, predatory producers, aggravating agents, and avant-garde artists are turning his world upside down by trying to hitch a ride on his supposedly rising star--which helps him to realize the horrible truth about the backward system that created his meteoric rise. Christopher Guest's (THIS IS SPINAL TAP) directorial debut skewers the Hollywood system, with ample help from a comedically gifted cast including Martin Short, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and John Cleese.

An inside look at how to not get a movie made.
Today's Hollywood is hilariously lampooned in The Big Picture, a behind the scenes look at the costs of making it in the hip and happening world of show business. Kevin Bacon stars as Nick Chapman, a naïve kid from Ohio who wins the Best Student Film award form the prestigious National Film Institute. Suddenly "hot," Nick jumps out of the ivory tower headlong into the Hollywood fast lane, where he's seduced by manic agents, power happy producers, and the irresistibly quirky Jennifer Jason Leigh. Giving in to temptation, Nick sells out, sacrificing his friends, his true love and his self-respect. But when his career comes to a screeching halt, his dream turns into a comic nightmare and he discovers beneath the Hollywood tinsel lies a system that breaks 'em as fast as it make 'em.

Christopher Guest cowrote and directed The Big Picture, a solid spoof about the pitfalls of believing your own hype. Kevin Bacon plays a high-minded would-be filmmaker whose student movie wins a prestigious national award and an invitation to Hollywood. Before he knows it, he is being wined and dined by agents, producers and studio executives, who treat him like the new Orson Welles--until he starts making his first studio movie. Then he becomes bait for the piranha-like bottom-liners, who teach him the unfortunate lesson that the flavour of the week often gets eaten alive. Watch for Martin Short as a hilariously feckless agent and Jennifer Jason Leigh as a surprisingly chipper film student, given her black-rimmed eyes and all-black wardrobe. --Marshall Fine
