Synopses for The Beautician and the Beast (1997)
1.

Beauty-school teacher Fran Drescher, basically reprising her television role in The Nanny, is whisked out of Queens and deposited in Eastern Europe after she is mistaken for a science teacher. Timothy Dalton is the gruff and stilted president for life she tames with mousse and kindness. Drescher, with that inimitable voice and colorful clothing, is very funny. It is not a far stretch to compare her favorably with Lucille Ball. The script, however, matches her bubbly humor with nothing but clunkiness. A mild diversion, this is one of many Hollywood comedies that works just fine on video. --Rochelle O'Gorman

2.As the result of some seriously botched communication, an over-the-top hairdresser from Queens (Fran Drescher) gets sent to a fictional eastern bloc country as a science tutor for the children of a dour, widowed dictator (Timothy Dalton) . Though she doesn't know anything about science, her charming, flamboyant manner teaches her students' father a thing or two about loosening up--and cutting hair.

3.  Once Upon At Time...

With a ready supply of one-liners and a delightfully retro sense of fashion, Fran Drescher provides the who, what, when and wear of this funny and smart comedy about a ruler from a land of tyrants and kings - and a hairdresser from Queens.

Eager to make her way in the world, hairdresser Joy Miller (Drescher) gets her chance when she's sent to a modern once-upon-a-time land called Slovetzia to tutor the three children of gruff, widowed dictator Boris Pochenko (Timothy Dalton). Joy thinks she's been hired as a beautician. Boris thinks she's been hired as an able science teacher. Science or not, chemistry of another sort begins to work it's magic. Joy's spirited openness blows the cobwebs off tradition-bound Slovetzia. And her resourcefulness give Pochenko's heart a makeover...or does it? The best way to find out is to make an appointment with The Beautician And The Beast.
