The movie is based on an actual event that took place in Alaska during the winter of 1925. Nome experienced a diphtheria epidemic and dogsleds were used in a mission to deliver antitoxin. The rescue effort was named the "Great Race of Mercy." After making the trip successfully, the dog Balto became a hero. He was honored with a statue in Manhattan's Central Park, and the annual Iditarod dogsled race continues to be held in his memory.
