The 40 Year Old Virgin Reviews |
Apatow and Carell know geekdom, and they have a lot of fun at its expense (although I was surprised that there were no Star Trek jokes). And when you think you've seen everything, the filmmakers give us an ending of amazing audacity. This is one of 2005's funniest and most endearing motion pictures. It’s almost surprising how truly good a no-holds-barred, crass sex comedy can be these days, but The 40-Year-Old Virgin pulls it off. It’s got a big heart and an even bigger sense of overgrown adolescence about it, but in the end, it’s pretty much just hysterical. And that’s what makes it some of the most guilt-free fun of the summer. [read review] --Annie Gilbert (Tailslate.net)
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is one of those rare R-rated comedies that can be described as sweet. As if that weren't enough, it's capped by a brilliantly looney lip-synched rendition of "Aquarius" that begins in Andy's bed and ends as a free-spirited dance by reassembled cast members. At roughly two hours, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is about 15 minutes too long and -- it bears repeating -- foul-mouthed and graphic. But Carell gives it his all, and that includes some of his chest hair, waxed on camera. Those scenes almost look like outtakes, with everyone laughing, including the woman wielding the wax. While it's just a little too long, The 40 Year Old Virgin is certainly worth seeing and its definitely a movie that will appeal to male and female audiences alike. Steve Carell may be moving into the same arena as Will Farrell as a comedian who's able tocarry a film on his performances alone. [read review]
Director Judd Apatow, who co-wrote the screenplay with Carell, filmed "Virgin" with a sprightly energy but also with a disabling lack of perspective. At two hours the picture is way too long for what it is -- a sketch that doesn't know when to quit. [read review]
Carell is able to do the difficult job of making Andy a little pathetic but making sure the audience never feels sorry for him or ridicules him. The makers of The 40 Year-Old Virgin obviously like its main character, and that is contagious. [read review]
Still, in the dog days of summer – and Hollywood’s unleashed quite a few dogs this season – The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a standout, a gross-out comedy that makes its audience go "awwww" as much as it goes "ewwww." [read review] --Kimberley Jones (Austin Chronicle)
But then again, there is nothing wrong with clever writing, delivered with impeccable timing by a talented cast, in a film that seemed like a one note premise, but turned out to be a sweetly memorable original. [read review]
The strong cast doesn't let its star down. Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen are ideal as his caring friends. Catherine Keener also is appealing as one of Andy's possible conquests. [read review]
It's a comedy about loss, literally and figuratively, and its hippy-dippy conclusion, not to put too fine a point on it, feels a little like a fond send-off for an entire generation.- [read review]
For all its often hilarious misogynistic posturing and idiotic, Spike TV-style homophobia, this sweet romantic comedy could pass for a certified chick flick. [read review]
Regardless, Virgin is still a must see. It could have been the funniest and sweetest movie of the year -- too bad it's just not able to finish. [read review] --David Levine (FilmCritic.com)
Apatow's direction is often haphazard. The movie's homemade look and general clumsiness only makes sense in the joyous, crude-looking finale. [read review] -- (Boston Globe)
The movie is very funny and should play very well with fans of Bad Santa and Old School. [read review] B --Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
