external link...there's not an inappropriate instance in Dreamer, making it suitable for the under-seven crowd. The problem is that anyone older than that age is going to wish they had shot the horse and gotten things over with in the first fifteen minutes. 2/4

external linkThe movie is a well-made use of familiar materials, including the loyalty between a child and a horse that goes back to "National Velvet" (1944) and "The Black Stallion" (1979). It's aimed at an audience of teenagers who may never have heard of those films, and for them, "Dreamer" will be an exciting experience. 3/4
--Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)

external link“Dreamer” is said to be inspired by a true story, and the script is very loosely based on the actual tale of a filly called Mariah’s Storm, which came back from a 1993 injury to race again. But everything else in the movie is the purest fiction--and purecorn--and though Gatins and his cast serve it up as slickly as one could ask, it still comes across as more than a little stale. C

external linkBland family fare that goes down easy but neither edifies nor challenges. 2/4
--Jeanne Aufmuth

external linkIs this a brilliant film? No. It's ordinary in a lot of ways, and it reminds me of why stories like this usually have one parent dead: because the story doesn't have have room for both of them...But it excels in the important areas of warmth and honesty. Most people enjoy a sweet, wholesome movie with an inspiring story; "Dreamer" is a reminder that those people need not be suckers. B+

external linkBut this is, after all, a movie. And as far as I’m concerned this comes close to being a perfect movie, one easily enjoyed by children and adults alike. 9/10
