Tagline: A romance ahead of its time.
Plot: The glorious world of Jane Austen is at last brought back to the big screen in all its romance, wit, and emotional force in Pride & Prejudice. Faithful to the setting and period of the beloved novel and filmed entirely on location in the U.K, this is the first movie version of the story in 65 years. The classic tale of love and misunderstanding unfolds in class-conscious England near the close of the 18th century. The five Bennet sisters – Elizabeth, or Lizzie (Keira Knightley), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia (Jena Malone), Mary (Talulah Riley), and Kitty (Carey Mulligan) – have been raised well aware of their mother’s (two-time Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn) fixation on finding them husbands and securing set futures. The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth, however, strives to live her life with a broader perspective, as encouraged by her doting father (two-time Golden Globe Award winner Donald Sutherland). When wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley (Simon Woods) takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Period detail is impeccable, so the movie looks as good as it feels. Of Austen's novels, none is more beloved than this one, so it's good to see it once again brought to the screen with the pride which it deserves. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
..."Pride & Prejudice," one of the most delightful and heartwarming adaptations made from Austen or anybody else. Much of the delight and most of the heart comes from Keira Knightley, who plays Elizabeth as a girl glowing in the first light of perfection. --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
...Before you start thinking, “Oh great, another period piece with fancy costumes and boring dialog,” you should know that this movie is sharp-witted, funny, and never has a dull moment. It does have the required breathtaking English countryside for the setting, a lavish score, and terrific cinematography, but it’s also a thoroughly enjoyable love story that’s given a fresh new look with a lively cast.
Joe Wright’s adaptation is diligent, faithful, sweeping, full of witty retorts, generally well cast, and yet emotionally unpersuasive. The audience is offered a glance through the looking glass into the lives of the Bennets and their dark and handsome pursuits, but never are we allowed off the bus to fully engage. Sumptuous and diverting, this Pride & Prejudice is delightful, but only hints at being anything more. --Joel Meares (FilmCritic.com)
For Joe Wright in his directorial film debut to tackle Jane Austen of all things, well, it’s downright ballsy, but Austen, probably watching from beyond the literary ether, can rest assured that the spirit of her endeavors remains largely intact. --J.P. Mangalindan (MovieWeb)
Obviously, devotees of “Pride and Prejudice” are likely to embrace this version of their favorite book with open arms; for the rest of us, it probably won’t inspire you to reevaluate your feelings towards the book but it won’t inspire you to poke your eyes out either. --Peter Sobczynski (eFilmCritic.com)
