Poseidon Reviews |
Poseidon is devoid of anything that might conjure up memories of the Winslet/DiCaprio coupling. Its straightforward action/adventure approach is both a strength and a weakness. Petersen sets out to give us a group of undeveloped stock characters and a bunch of cheap thrills, and that's what he delivers. If that's the kind of thing you want from a would-be summer blockbuster, Poseidon will not disappoint. [read review] --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
... Poseidon does definitely keep the interest level high, and at 98 minutes, it flies by relatively quickly. However, as the credits start to roll, you’ll most likely come away with an empty feeling about it all, as if something vital were missing from the overall equation to make it truly satisfying. Without the emotional core, it’s like watching Titanic's cataclysmic finale with the two-hour build-up removed. [read review] --Vince Leo (Qwipster.net)
...The special effects that pop all around the cast as they are trying to climb up from the top of the ship to the bottom to get out are eye-popping. As exceptional as the special effects are, so are the stunts. There is no point at which the action lags. If you can willingly suspend your disbelief and accept the fact that this is a movie, so it is going to be full of plot holes, it’s fun, held my interest, and ends when it should end. ...I would say Poseidon is at best a matinee saved for a rainy day. It's not a total disaster. There is some good action, a few cool special effects, a couple of ruthless death scenes including a rather humourous one involving a kick off the old pant leg, and a peculiar statue that oddly enough, is shaped like a weiner. Did anyone else notice that? Most importantly, this movie is short, as in barely 1 1/2 hours long, so it's not like it's a major investment of your time.... While one could call both Poseidon adventures "guilty pleasures," I'd happily stick with the original film's semi-meandering pace and day-glo character development over the remake's "shake & bake" pacing and high-speed presentation. They're both fun flicks, though, and I suspect they'd make for a pretty entertaining double feature ... provided you can live without the use of your brain for four consecutive hours. ...has more cheese than the caves of Roquefort and more syrup than Vermont. Yet it is a flick that, while completely forgettable, is almost wholly inoffensive. It doesn’t want to be taken seriously so if, for some reason, you are willing to suspend disbelief, REALLY suspend it, there is a moderately good time to be had on the aquatic roller coaster. If you’re not, you will be spending a lot of time rooting for the ocean to make much quicker work of these plucky folk. [read review] --Andrea Chase (Killer Movie Reviews)
...As with any disaster epic, the corny dialogue is delivered at the most inopportune times, and you never get to know any of the characters, but really, what do you need to know about them anyway? Sorry, but if you’re looking for an emotionally engaging, character-driven love story, then go rent “Brokeback Mountain.” Otherwise, if you want to have fun with a big summer popcorn movie that’s packed with huge sets and non-stop thrills, then climb aboard “Poseidon.”... Poseidon is so vacuous, so utterly devoid of reason or purpose, that even its modest assets fail to leave any kind of impression. If you need to justify the big-screen experience, find something else. If you just want to see a ship sink, dust off Titanic... or better yet, try Netflixing Stephen Sommers' Deep Rising. It, at least, has the good sense to be in on the joke. [read review] D+ --Rob Vaux (Flipsidemovies.com)
The 1972 version wasn’t exactly a model of screenwriting genius, but at least it stopped to smell the roses. Petersen is too fixated on his pandemonium to gently encourage the roles past an elementary level, robbing great actors like Russell and Dreyfussof depth, and making unresolved talent such as Rossum, Lucas, and Barrett look even more unprofessional.. [read review] --Brian Orndorf (eFilmCritic.com)
As long as watching pretty people fight for their lives onscreen is your idea of a good time, then check out Poseidon....is nothing more than an action-heavy, 'leave your brain at the door and just go along for the ride' summer popcorn movie. [read review] B- --Rebecca Murray (About.com)
...The only minor tension comes from guessing who'll survive the journey, and there's at least one surprise on that front. My biggest surprise, though, was the wave of nostalgia I felt for The Poseidon Adventure... [read review] --GARY GOLDSTEIN (Reel.com)
If you’re looking for a fun little distraction that need not trouble you after you leave the theater, Poseidon may be a good way to go. Just don’t expect to be wowed by anything other than the effects. [read review] --Matt Seaver (eFilmCritic.com)
Personally I don't know what's not to enjoy here. This is perfect big-budget B-movieness. Simple plot, lots of action and a bit of melodrama thrown in just for kicks. Sit back and enjoy! [read review] --Scott Nash (TheMovieBuffs.com)
There is no great romance, no epic special effects, just a lot of terrible dialogue spoken by wooden actors in a film so CGI dependent; I felt like I was watching a video game. [read review] --Julian Roman (MovieWeb)
...Isn’t the only reason you want to see this movie is to see pretty people try and survive a major, special effects-laden disaster? Okay, then. Me too. Mission: accomplished. [read review] --Collin Souter (eFilmCritic.com)
“Poseidon” is a healthy reminder that nostalgia might be the most powerful drug there is. You know not to expect much, yet the allure is damn near irresistible.... [read review] --David Medsker (Bullz-eye.com)
Poseidon is most definitely an entertaining movie. Just don't expect subtle character development and an exacting plot - just a lot of water and explosions. [read review] 6.5/10 --Will Perkins (EmpireMovies.com)
"The Poseidon Adventure" was far from a great film, but it had a kitschy heart. "Poseidon" may have its Oscar winner, but its hull is empty. [read review] C
Wolfgang Peterson deviated from the tried and true formula of a disaster movie and "Poseidon" is a disaster because of it. [read review] --James Dickens (MovieWeb)
While "Poseidon" is an OK film, you might want to just save money and rent "The Poseidon Adventure." [read review] --Scott Chitwood (ComingSoon.net)
Poseidon doesn't necessarily look cheap, but the sets, imagery, and action all feel secondhand.... [read review] 4/10 --Jeffrey Chen (WindowToMovies.com)
A disaster thrill ride that's technically dazzling but emotionally uninvolving. [read review] --Sheri Linden (Hollywod Reporter)
