Land of the Dead Reviews |
Ultimately, however, copious gore and rotting flesh can only do so much for a movie, and the lack of ambition in Romero's storyline is where Land of the Dead fails. The movie will appeal to those with a penchant for zombie flicks, but is unlikely to reach further - not even to the broader "general horror" market. It's not startling or frightening enough. I just want to dwell a little bit in the glorious scene where all of the zombies have made their way across a huge body of water. It has been branded in my mind as one of the creepiest images I've ever experienced on the big screen- thousands of zombies just appearing out of the cold black sea moaning- it's truly an "epic" sequence and the defining moment of the film. “Land of the Dead” is nothing more than a zombie movie, but it’s a first-class zombie movie--good, ghoulish fun, staged with skill and a nicely twisted sense of humor. If this turns out to be Romero’s final effort in the genre, Pittsburgh’s Master of Mayhem is going out in high style. [read review] B
Land of the Dead is the biggest and baddest beast in Romero’s canon. And it may as well be the last word on American zombie cinema. And while it’s not a self-referential film or a post-modernist romp like the Scream franchise, Romero plays loosely with his cards and wins on every level. [read review] --Keith Breese (FilmCritic.com)
Land of the Dead is so tight and moves so swiftly (at only 93 mins) that its hard to fault Romero’s technique for getting us in, entertaining the hell out of us, making his point and getting us out in near record time. [read review] --Erik Childress (eFilmCritic.com)
I never thought id say this but i preferred the high action Dawn of the dead remake to this movie and I've never wanted to say this but i think that Land of the dead should of stayed dead. [read review] -- (terrorwatch.net)
As a gorefest, Land of the Dead earns high marks. Romero finds plenty of new ways to let the undead eat their fill, which are clever and horrifying in equal amounts. [read review] B --Rob Vaux (Flipsidemovies.com)
Better than just about everything else in the last ten years featuring flesh eating, must shoot them in the head to kill ‘em, lumbering ghouls? Yes. Absolutely. [read review] --Paul Zimmerman (eFilmCritic.com)
LAND OF THE DEAD works on every level it aims for and then some. It may be a little gory for some, but this is a classic -- smart, funny, and scary as hell. [read review] --Andrea Chase (Killer Movie Reviews)
...Romero finds still new and entertaining ways for unspeakably disgusting things to happen to the zombies and their victims. [read review] --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
This is the zombie movie we've all been waiting for. The perfect marriage of blood, guts and epic storytelling. [read review] --Brian Balchack (MovieWeb)
...fans of the Dead series will not be disappointed. Land of the Dead is all that it needed to be and more so. [read review]
