Tagline: A picture for anyone who has ever dreamed of a second chance!
Plot: Martin Scorsese leaves the confines of New York City in order to direct this touching drama about a newly widowed woman who hopes to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a singer. Fleeing her small New Mexico town, Alice Hyatt (Ellen Burstyn) climbs into a station wagon with her 11-year-old son, Tommy (Alfred Lutter), headed for her hometown of Monterey, California. After a brief stay in Phoenix, where troubles rear their ugly head in the form of Ron (Harvey Keitel), the pair settles in Tucson and Alice grudgingly takes a job as a waitress in order to save up enough money to complete the trip. Once there, however, she is courted by David (Kris Kristofferson), a warmhearted customer who is intent on forming a relationship with her. At the same time, Tommy befriends Audrey (Jodie Foster), a young tomboy with a mischievous streak. As Alice and David continue to grow closer, she must decide once again whether to put her dream of becoming a singer on hold. Ellen Burstyn’s hysterical, moving performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar, and it is her Alice that makes the film such a sentimental, bittersweet affair. Scorsese struck a gold mine in finding the spunky Lutter, who interacts with Burstyn with an ease that is truly remarkable.
