Cold Mountain Reviews |
There is so much to enjoy about "Cold Mountain" that I can praise it for its parts, even though it lacks a whole. I admire the characters played by Kidman and Law, even though each one is an island, entire to himself. I loved Zellweger's gumption, and the way she treats a dress like a dishrag. The battle scenes and the Civil War landscapes (shot in Romania) have beauty and majesty. [read review] -- (Chicago Sun-Times)
...a stodgy and superfluous adaptation of Charles Frazier’s Civil War romance novel that’s every bit as unconvincing as it’s meant to be epic. Frigid and detached to the point of numbness, the passionless period piece is too staged, too dry, and too silly to matter, though Minghella earns bonus points for staying consistently dishonest and uneven from start to finish. Primarily Cold Mountain is a powerful love story given depth and pathos through the impossible obstacles the lovers face, while the inevitable suffering and hardships undergone by all the characters give mordant reality to the far-reaching devastation ofwar. Anthony Minghella’s “Cold Mountain” is a rapturous, unusual romantic adventure, detailing mostly unexplored sides to the Civil War and female companionship. Populated with miles of stunt casting, along with two seamless lead performances, the film’s fateis truly sealed by Renee Zellweger, who commits grand theft movie, and pushes “Mountain” into becoming one of the best pictures of the year. This is what they mean by the magic of the movies: A British director born to Italian parents re-creates Civil War America in Romania, with the help of another Brit as leading man, an Australian actress and the Romanian army. [read review] --Ron Weiskind (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
I would not place this in the top echelon of end-of-the-year motion pictures, but it's certainly a successful adaptation, features numerous memorable performances, and is worth a post-holiday expenditure of time and money. [read review] -- (ReelViews)
The chief problem, though, is that despite fine work by Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, the story feels hollow at its core, the central romance barely resonating as the life-sustaining force it's meant to be. [read review] -- (Boxoffice Magazine)
Cold is right -- Anthony Minghella's pretty, star-studded adaptation of the bestselling Civil War romance never makes it above freezing. And, gee, didn't those Southern whites have it rough? [read review] -- (Salon)
In the tradition of not liking Miramax’s big Oscar contender films, Gangs of New York, as well as Chicago, my streak continues again with their supposedly epic romance, Cold Mountain. [read review] C --Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
The film adaptation of "Cold Mountain" is an epic love story that conveys the horrors of war in an up-close and personal way often attempted in movies but rarely achieved. [read review] --Paul Clinton (CNN Showbiz)
Beautifully photographed, moving drama, with impressive performances from its three leads and a terrific supporting cast. It’s still too long, though. [read review] --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
Cold Mountain has everything a moviegoer could want in a movie... there's just too much of it, and way too much Zellweger, in more ways than one. [read review] --Brian Gallagher (MovieWeb)
Mills & Boon meets Greek myth in Anthony Minghella's episodic epic, which takes excellent actors and dunks them in romance so gloopy they drown. [read review] --Nev Pierce (BBC Films)
Anthony Minghella offers a beautiful adaptation of Charles Frazier’s beloved novel, from the script to the actors to the look of the film. [read review] A --Jennifer Alpeche (Lee's Movie Info)
Cold Mountain'' is long and seems long, at times inspired, at times merely dutiful. But in most of the important ways, it succeeds. [read review] --Mick LaSalle (San Francisco Chronicle)
A gorgeous, epic film whose characters, story and production are just about perfect in every way. Do not miss Cold Mountain. [read review] --Leigh Johnson (Hollywood.com)
All in all, "Cold Mountain" is everything you could ask for. It's a great old-fashioned wallow of a time at the movies. [read review] -- (Washington Post)
A classically crafted Civil War epic with actions and ideas aplenty - but not enough to fill its excessive length. [read review] 7/10 --Anton Bitel (Movie Gazette)
"Cold Mountain" may elicit a certain amount of enthusiastic response now, but its shelf life will be a short one. [read review] --Jeffrey M. Anderson (San Francisco Examiner)
A better acted version of the old dime a dozen made for TV dramas, and it carries all of the sterility involved. [read review] --Carl Lazarevic (MovieWeb)
“Cold Mountain” is a good movie and then some. I feel it, and in this case I think it’s there. [read review] --Kevin N. Laforest (Montreal Film Journal)
