It will take your breath away. All of it. Something very strange is happening in the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff where tourists and transients are warmly welcomed, then brutally murdered. But even more shocking is when these slain strangers suddenly reappear as normal, friendly citizens around town. Now the local sheriff (James Farentino of The Final Countdown) and an eccentric mortician (Oscar® winner Jack Albertson in his final feature film performance), must uncover the horrific secret of a community where some terrifying traditions are alive and well... and no one is ever really Dead & Buried. Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) co-stars in this genuinely chilling horror hit written by Robert Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (Alien), directed by Gary A. Sherman (Poltergeist III) and featuring ultra-grisly gore effects by Oscar® winner Stan Winston (Terminator 2, Aliens). Dead & Buried is now presented completely uncut and uncensored (including controversial 'hypodermic needle in the eyeball' scene).

Overlooked during its theatrical run but a cult favorite on video, this unique and chilling take on the zombie film finally joins the digital ranks with a two-DVD set from Blue Underground. James Farentino stars as a small-town sheriff who discovers that the victims in a string of grisly murders are reappearing seemingly alive and unharmed. His investigation leads him to suspect that the local mortician (Jack Albertson) is somehow responsible for these reanimated corpses; what Farentino doesn't know is the extent to which the entire town-himself included-is involved. First-time viewers will appreciate director Gary Sherman's attention to pacing and atmosphere, as well as the often darkly humorous script by co-producer Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (Alien, Total Recall) and the solid cast (which includes future horror star Robert Englund); longtime fans will appreciate the fact that Blue Underground's uncut print restores many of Stan Winston's gruesome special effects. --Paul Gaita
DVD features In addition to an uncut, widescreen print, Blue Underground's double-disc set offers no less than three separate commentaries for Dead and Buried, each moderated by the label's David Gregory, and featuring director Gary Sherman; co-producer/co-writer Ronald Shusett and his wife Linda, who also appears in the film; and cinematographer Steve Poster. Each track provides a wealth of behind-the-scenes information, mostly about the film's considerable growing pains (production company changes transformed the film from a black comedy to a gory thriller to please the slasher crowd). The second disc offers interview featurettes with special effects creator Winston, actor Robert Englund, and co-author Dan O'Bannon; the first two are fairly dry talking-head segments, but O'Bannon offers some interesting anecdotes on his involvement in the picture as well as his opinions on horror in general. The extras are rounded out by the American and international trailers, location stills from Poster, and a gallery of promotional art. --Paul Gaita

From the writers of ALIEN, this thriller is the story of a mysterious coastal town called Potters Bluff. For years the town has harbored a dark secret, one that the town sheriff has just stumbled across. It seems that a number of strangers who have crossed through Potters Bluff have not only been brutally murdered, but have turned up in town as locals after being killed. Sure that there must be some explanation, the sheriff and the town mortician try to uncover the mystery and find something more shocking than they could have imagined.
