Plot: Hoax (Stephen Geoffreys), the nerdy teen hero of 976-EVIL, spends most of his time envying his super-cool, biker cousin, Spike, when he's not being bullied at school or oppressed at home by his religious fanatic mother. Things take a radical turn when Hoax begins calling a toll-free phone number that provides daily "horrorscopes," and he becomes possessed by a demonic force that enters his mind and body via the telephone line. Soon he's taking violent revenge on all those who crossed him. The film is directed by Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger from the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

This is a competently directed and watchable time that manages to be enjoyably campy at times and although there's only a so-so finish and when Geoffreys becomes possessed he becomes too much of a wisecracking killer that feels very similar to Englund's Freddy character it's still not that bad with Geoffrey's suitably geeky, Sandy Dennis going completely over-the-top as his religious fantatic mother and alright Kevin Yagher make-up effects -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)

Sure, the same concept was done before—quite ineffectively in "Evil Speak" and much more effectively in "Carrie"—but Englund made a pretty effective horror film on a low budget.-- (eSplatter.com)
