 Synopses for Airport (1970)
1.Take a non-stop flight with an all-star cast to a world of tension-filled human drama in this trend-setting box office blockbuster. Based on Arthur Hailey's runaway best seller, the emotion-charged adventure stars Burt Lancaster as the manager of a glamorous international airport who must juggle personal crisis with professional responsibilities as he attempts to keep his blizzard torn facility open to rescue a bomb-damaged jetliner.

The lavish Ross Hunter production co-stars a veritable Who's Who of Hollywood's most glittering personalities. The often imitated but never duplicated movie milestone remains a gripping trip from suspenseful take-off to sense-shattering landing.

2.One of the original "disaster" movies, this all-star nail-biter follows a series of emergencies at a large Midwestern airport on a snowy night. The weather's bad enough, but then a passenger threatens to blow up an inbound plane. Based on Arthur Hailey's novel. Sequels include Airport 1975, Airport '77 and The Concorde - Airport '79 and dozens of other catastrophe epics built from the same blueprint. Academy Award Nominations: 10, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay.

3.

One of the first of the big disaster films, this stodgy Hollywood product lumbers and creaks as it tries to sort out the various plot threads of Arthur Hailey's doorstop of a novel. Set at (what else?) a busy metropolitan airport, it details what happens one eventful night when, among other things, a huge blizzard threatens to disrupt air traffic for the airport manager (Burt Lancaster) even as a suicidal bomber (Van Heflin) heads into the air with mayhem on his mind. There's also an impish old lady (Helen Hayes, who won an Oscar for this role) who specializes in sneaking aboard airliners, and the married pilot (Dean Martin) is having an affair with a stewardess (Jacqueline Bisset). An old-fashioned movie that inspired a bunch of sequels, the Airplane spoofs, and a host of other disaster films. --Marshall Fine

4.  Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin head an all-star cast in this classic disaster film from producer Ross Hunter, for Helen Hayes received her second Oscar. On the ground, manager Mel bakersfeld (Lancaster) juggles lover Jean Seberg and wife Dana Wynter while coping with a blizzard, aided by mechanic George Kennedy(who returned in all three sequels). In the sky, Capt. Vern Demerest (Martin) must maintain control of a 707 with his pregnant stewardess girlfriend(Jacquelie Bisset), a sly stowaway (Hayes), and a bomb-toting maniac (Van Heflin) aboard. Often imitated but never equaled, this box office hit was adapted by Academy Award winner George Seaton(Miracle on 34th Street, The Country Girl) from the best seller by Alex Hailey(Hotel).
