Synopses for Life or Something Like It (2002)
1.An ambitious TV anchorwoman, Lanie Kerrigan (Angelina Jolie) decides to change her destiny when a homeless man tells her she'll die within a week. Lanie is perfect; engaged to Seattle Mariners star Cal (Christian Kane), the famous host of a popular TV show, and adorned in a perfect wardrobe enhanced by her trademark Marilyn Monroe-inspired blonde buffont. To top it all off, her boss recommends her for her dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned, but difficult, cameraman Pete (Edward Burns). On an assignment, Prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), tells Lanie three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedic role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE).

2."Jolie and Burns exude charisma and chemistry!" -Los Angeles Times

Angelina Jolie and Edward Burns sizzle in this romantic comedy about making choices, making friends and making a mess. Lanie (Jolie) is a beautiful, ambitious newscaster who thinks that having the perfect hair, perfect boyfriend and perfect apartment adds up to the perfect life, until an encounter with a street psychic throws her world into chaos. With the help of her handsome, wise-cracking co-worker Peter (Burns), Lanie must face a destiny as hilarious as it is romantic.

3.What would you do if you thought you only had one week left to live? Would you radically change what was left of your life? Re-evaluate your values and priorities?

Those are the last questions in the world that Lanie Kerrigan (Angelina Jolie) thought she'd ever have to face. A feature reporter at a Seattle television station, Lamie thinks her life is perfect. Perfect job. Perfect apartment. Perfect wardrobe. Perfect boyfriend.

But her "perfect" world states unraveling after a homeless street seer (Tony Shalhoub) tells Lanie that she leads a meaningless existence, and will die the following week. When the savant's other predictions come true, Lanie begins to re-examine her life and priorities, all in a whirlwind one-week period. As if things weren't crazy enough for Lanie, romantic sparks fly as she reluctantly teams with a cameraman (Edward Burns) with whom she has long been at odds.

4.

Angelina Jolie proves her box-office versatility in Life or Something Like It, a romantic comedy (Jolie's first) that succeeds on the strength of Jolie's appealing performance. As Seattle TV news reporter Lanie Kerrigan, Jolie craves celebrity (i.e., she's insecure and seeks approval), but her disapproving cameraman (Edward Burns) detects an admirable woman beneath Lanie's bleached-blond coif and pancake makeup. When a homeless street prophet (Tony Shalhoub) predicts that Lanie will soon be dead, she gradually juggles her priorities, connecting with Burns, appearing drunk on camera (a mistake that ultimately works in her favor), and finding new confidence in her professional and romantic potential. It's generic fluff, but director Stephen Herek (Rock Star, Mr. Holland's Opus) approaches the material with his reliably good-natured sincerity, and Jolie's bubbly charm mixes well with Burns's casual sensibility. And while Herek can't compare to George Cukor or Billy Wilder, he knows just how to handle the inevitable loopholes in the prophet's not-so-gloomy premonition. --Jeff Shannon
