Grab your favorite munchies, kids. Red and Meth, that dope-addled dynamic duo, are going to Harvard! And while it's not an episode of Masterpiece Theatre, How High is destined to become a guilty pleasure of the cannabis crowd. The plot's a familiar one--take the basic selling points of any Cheech & Chong movie (a pair of shambolic protagonists who smoke lots of weed while slinging slang and driving funky, '70s-style cars), graft them onto a generic "raising hell on campus" teen movie scenario, and shake vigorously. The result is a prosaic effort that does contain some all-too-brief moments of genuine humor. Red and Meth, a.k.a. Redman and Method Man, may look like the world's oldest freshmen, but both offer genial performances, especially Method Man, who imbues the character of Silas with a dog-eared gentleness that raises him above the film's leaden script and plasticine directing. --Rebecca Levine

HOW HIGH is a raucous comedy about two underachieving potheads from the projects, Cyrus and Jamal (rappers Method Man and Redman), who, through bizarre circumstances, end up attending Harvard University. It all begins when Cyrus' friend Ivory dies, and Cyrus uses his ashes as fertilizer to grow marijuana. When the two are taking their college entrance exams, Jamal explains his philosophy: Study high. Take the test high. Get high scores. Smoking Cyrus' magical weed somehow summons the ghost of the brainy Ivory, who gives them all the answers to the exam. They are recruited by Chancellor Huntley (Fred Willard) to attend Harvard, where they use the weed to continue their academic success, but thanks to the machinations of the uptight Dean Cain (Obba Babatunde), they soon find themselves without Ivory's help, and are forced to maintain their scholarship grades on their own. The plot reaches its peak of comic ludicrousness when the hapless duo attempts to dig up and smoke the remains of John Quincy Adams. HOW HIGH features Mike Epps, Tracy Morgan, and Spalding Gray in supporting roles. The film is scabrously funny and refreshingly free of logic, reason, and political correctness.

Silas (Method Man) and Jamal (Redman) never plan to attend Harvard. They never even plan to meet. Silas and Jamal don't plan.
In Staten Island, Silas reigns as the neighborhood medicine man with herb-based remedies for everything from the flu to impotence. His best friend Ivory (Chuck Davis) says he should go to medical school. Silas never takes this seriously until a freak accident claims Ivory's life. In tribute, Silas plants Ivory's ashes with some special seeds, and a beautiful plant emerges. With super-sized "Ivory" buds in tow, Silas sets out to honor his friend's dying wish by taking the college entrance exam.
Over in Jersey, laid-back Jamal has spent six years in junior college when he is suddenly expelled. His mother (Anna Maria Horstord), who had big dreams of her son graduating from a four-year college, is furious. When she threatens to the college entrance exam.
Outside the testing center, Silas sits in his car nervous. As he looks for a light, Jamal pulls into the parking lot, looking for a joint, and a friendship is born. But as they fire up Silas's "Ivory", the dead man himself emerges in the haze of smoke. Ivory explains that he always has Silas's back, even in death, and later, as Silas and Jamal take the college entrance exam, Ivory helps them achieve perfect scores. A recruiting frenzy ensues.
Desperate to diversify the student body, Chancellor Huntley (Fred Willard) lures Jamal and Silas to Harvard. Ivy League ways are strange but Silas and Jamal take it in stride. Their exuberant personalities, however, clash with conservative Dean Cain (Obba Babatunde). With his eye on the top job, Dean Cain sets out to discredit Chancellor Huntley's decision to recruit the duo. Nevertheless, Silas and Jamal get into the swing of campus life, and even fall in love. Silas is taken with Lauren (Lark Voorhies), whose boyfriend Bart (Chris Elwood) is from one of Harvard's most prestigious families. Jamal falls for Jamie (Essence Atkins), the rebellious daughter of the Vice President (Jeffrey Jones).
Everything is great — until Ivory's plant is stolen. Without their supernatural smoke, Silas and Jamal fall into a slump — and Dean Cain is ready to show them the door. To survive, Silas and Jamal must tap an even more natural resource — their wits.
