ALAN CUMMING's film career started in Europe with Ian Sellar's Prague and Chris Menges' Second Best. He went on to make Circle Of Friends opposite Minnie Driver, Goldeneye and Emma alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, before coming to America to make Romy And Michele's High School Reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino. Since then he has appeared in a variety of roles in independent films such as Rudolf van den Berg's For My Baby, Jake Scott's Plunkett And Macleane (with Robert Garlyle and Liv Tyler) and more recently Jon Shear's Urbania, as well as Spice world, The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas and the recent TV movie 'Annie' opposite Kathy Bates. He played Saturninus opposite Jessica Lange and Anthony Hopkins in Julie Taymor's Titus, and worked with Stanley Kubrick in his last film Eyes Wide Shut.
In 2001 he will be seen in Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids with Antonio Banderas, Josie And The Pussycats with Rachel Leigh Cook and Parker Posey, Company Man with Sigourney Weaver, Woody Allen, John Turturro and Doug McGrath, and Alan Rudolph's Investigating Sex opposite Nick Nolte and Neve Campbell.
His portrayal of the Emcee in the Broadway revival of 'Cabaret' was one of the most celebrated performances of recent years, earning him the Tony®, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Theater World and New York Public Advocate's Awards. Other theater work in the U.K. includes the title role in 'Hamlet' for which he won the Martini Rossi/TMA Best actor award and a Shakespeare Globe award nomination. He also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre where he won a Lawrence Olivier Award for his performance in 'Accidental Death Of An Anarchist'. He earned a further three Olivier award nominations for his London theater work.
His writing credits include 'The High Life', a series for BBC2, and several 'Victor And Barry' shows, which he also performed with Forbes Masson. He directed 'Burn Your Phone' for BBC2 and the short film Butter, which he also wrote. He also appeared in the British TV films 'Mickey Love', 'The Last Romantics', 'The Chemistry Lesson And Bernard' and 'The Genie' for which he won the British Comedy Award for Television Newcomer.
