Plot: Hans Weingartner’s THE WHITE SOUND is a relentless, unflinching, and, above all else, arrestingly honest depiction of a young man’s descent into schizophrenia. Lukas (played with brave abandon by Daniel Bruhl) is a handsome 21-year-old who moves to Cologne to live with his sister, Kati (Anabelle Lachatte), and her pot-smoking friend, Jochen (Patrick Joswig). At first, things are great, as the trio hit the town, partying to their hearts’ content. But after eating mushrooms in the country one afternoon, Lukas begins to hear voices inside his head. His sister and Jochen blame it on the drugs, but days later, when the voices get louder and more incessant, it becomes quite clear that the problem lies within Lukas himself. Eventually, Lukas is diagnosed as a schizophrenic, and after a stay in a mental hospital, he returns home. It isn’t long after he decides to stop taking his medication that the voices return, sending him into an even deeper state of disturbance. Adopted by a caravan of hippies, Lukas winds up in Spain, at the ocean, longing for the voices to disappear forever. Using hand-held cameras and shooting on digital video, Weingartner captures the horror of schizophrenia with impressive skill and compassion. This film was included in the 31st New Directors/New Films 2002
