Tagline: In every neighborhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid.

Plot: Fool, a 13-year-old boy, lives in the ghetto with his sister and sick mother. When his family doesn’t have enough money to pay the rent, Fool is persuaded by Leroy (Ving Rhames) to break into his landlord’s house to steal a valuable coin collection. Once Fool and Leroy are inside the huge and heavily fortified house, they realize they’ve gotten more than they bargained for, as the landlords turn out to be an insane brother and sister couple (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) who murder visitors and keep their kidnapped "sons" locked up in the basement as deformed monsters. external linkOverall some people say the movie is stupid, others think it's great. It's all about your taste. Me, I don't mind a little insanity with my movie.

external linkStunning entertainment from start to finish, the acting is great from everyone involved, there's an excellent story and Craven directs with style and intelligence. A winner. 3/4

external linkA surprisingly intelligent, class-conscious and political thriller, "People Under the Stairs" marked a real upswing in Craven's work.

external linkA good an entertaining horror flick. Gives you a mix-bag of things and doesn't just focus on what's "under the stairs." Not recommended for scares or gore, but worth a check if you're lookin' fora fun flick. 8/10
