Lost in Translation Reviews

external linkIf you get the sense that I applaud this movie, you are correct. Lost in Translation requires a certain amount of patience, but it is by no means a slow or lugubrious endeavor. Director Coppola has done what any young director wants to accomplish: improve upon a successful first feature. As good as The Virgin Suicides is, Lost in Translation is superior in almost every way. [read review] 4/4
--James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
external linkMs. Coppola's movie also happens to be hilarious -- a paean to dislocated people discovering how alive they are when they can barely keep their eyes open. The sexiness comes from the busy, desperate need-to-impress heat of a flirtation, an unrequited love communicated through a filter of sleep deprivation. [read review]
--Elvis Mitchell (The New York Times)
external linkWhile Lost in Translation isn't quite the masterpiece a lot of critics have been saying it is, the film does stand as real proof that Coppola's got genuine talent (not to mention that she's not just a one-hit wonder). And, of course, there's Murray's performance - which is completely different than anything he's done before. [read review] 2.5/4
--David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)
external linkLost in Translation is one of the best movies of 2003, but quiet, intimate, personal character dramas like this seldom make much hay at the Oscars. ...With shades of everyone from Bertolucci to Truffaut, Sofia Coppola just became one of those directors whose movies I will now be anticipating the hell out of. Her well-written and thoughtful screenplay matches up with a brilliantly executed film to give you one hell of a cinematic experience. [read review] 8.5/10

external linkThis is the kind of movie that my parents would shut off halfway through and slap me upside the head for recommending in the first place. It's slow, it's introspective, it features a number of scenes with no dialogue & characters simply walking about town, and ultimately, it doesn't have much to say...on the surface. [read review] 7/10
--'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
external linkIn stark defiance of formal narrative, Coppola's film follows a course more akin to the movies of the French New Wave than anything American; it's directionless but not aimless, the course of the story dictated by the spontaneous evolution of a relationship that transcends sex, romance and even friendship. ... Ostensibly, "Lost in Translation" is a film about love, albeit one which has the audacity to ask what love is--and the courage to leave the question unanswered. [read review]
--Wade Major (Boxoffice Magazine)
external linkWell, I loved this movie. I loved the way Coppola and her actors negotiated the hazards of romance and comedy, taking what little they needed and depending for the rest on the truth of the characters. I loved the way Bob and Charlotte didn't solve their problems, but felt a little better anyway. I loved the moment near the end when Bob runs after Charlotte and says something in her ear, and we're not allowed to hear it. [read review] 4/4
--ROGER EBERT (Chicago Sun-Times)
external link"Lost in Translation" doesn't have much of a plot. It's a character study made poignant by the performances of the two leads and most of all a mood piece, blending real feelings that run the gamut of possibilities -- much like Murray's world-weary visage. In any language, this movie casts an enchanting spell. [read review]
--Ron Weiskind (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
external linkBILL MURRAY does with his face what Yo-Yo Ma does with the cello. He's a master of this very personal instrument. The slightest glance can mean so many things: disgust, bewilderment, irritation, incredulity or sarcasm. Then the eyes revert to their deadpan glaze, and you wait with giggly anticipation for the next subtle reaction. [read review]
--Desson Howe (Washington Post)
external linkSofia Coppola directs their scenes with the lightest of hands, and gives us a film so poignant, so funny, so free of self-satisfied bravado, that one can't help but look forward to her next work. She's not only a gifted filmmaker but also a wise one. [read review]
--Edward Guthmann (San Francisco Chronicle)
external linkWhile it may not exactly change your life, 'Lost in Translation' is a smart, stylish portrait of a romance that never happens, with excellent performances and a message delivered in restrained whisper rather than Hollywood shout. [read review] 7/10
--Anton Bitel (Movie Gazette)
external linkLost in Translation rockets into my top ten of the year for not only being a well-written movie, not only being a well-acted and well-directed movie, but also for being just brilliantly shot and beautiful to look at. [read review] 8.5/10

external link"Lost in Translation" is a smartly written, confidently directed film that delivers big laughs while developing two of the year's most earnest characters and some of its most rewarding sentiments. [read review] 3.5/4
--Jack Mathews (New York Daily News)
external linkOne problem: The fragile plot defies blunt description. How to pin down a moonbeam that tickles you with laughs, teases you with romantic possibility and then melts into heartbreak? [read review]

external linkLost In Translation is another superb effort from director Sofia Coppola and should earn its place on a few lists this upcoming awards season, particularly star Bill Murray. [read review] 3.5/4
--Kit Bowen (Hollywood.com)
external linkSofia Coppola’s follow-up to The Virgin Suicides is a thoroughly delightful film with terrific performances from its two leads – it’s also one of the best films of the year. [read review] 5/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
external linkAn amazing mood piece that captures the characters’ inner turmoil, confusion, restlessness and the strange, surreal surroundings that are the cause for their discord. [read review] 84/100
--Derek Smith (Apollo Guide)
external linkOverall "Lost In Translation" is a beautiful movie about love and friendship and finding a way to live your life without the weight of the world bearing down on you. [read review] 10/10
--J. Alan Terzino (Movie-Vault.com)
external linkSofia Coppola's stealthy romance about two Americans stranded in Tokyo is a work of marvelous delicacy -- and offers the performance of Bill Murray's career. [read review]
--Stephanie Zacharek (Salon)
external linkThat's really the magic of the movie, which is, in the end, wonderfully nice. It gets at something exquisitely human, so human that even movie stars feel it. [read review]

external linkAnd that’s about that, another elusive non-story about oh-so-existential beautiful misfits, with interesting visuals and an awesome soundtrack. [read review] 2.5/4

external linkA crystal clear translation of life in all its bitter contrasts, this movie finds what is lost in the language of being. [read review] 4/5
