Seabiscuit Reviews

external linkThat fabulous story is re-created from Laura Hillenbrand's brilliant book in a movie that, although nowhere near the class of its equine hero, is quite a satisfying ride. In places, it looks a little too much like a high-gloss car commercial -- I kept expecting someone to say "rich Corinthian leather" -- and maybe we could use fewer slow-mo trumpet-driven struts across the finish line. It comes to resemble a "Chariots of Fire" for quadrupeds. [read review]
--Stephen Hunter (Washington Post)
external linkThis is a good movie, but not a great one, because it takes elements and premises and ideas that we all know so well, massages them together for a nice, easy rub, but ultimately doesn't overwhelm with any noticeable creative touches, surprises or mind-blowing "finishes". It's ROCKY, but with a horse. [read review] 7/10
--'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
external linkEventually, Seabiscuit settles into a nice rhythm, and, as it enters the stretch run, it exhibits all the necessary elements of a good sports movie. Like the horse it's named after, Seabiscuit has a lot of heart, and, in the end, that's what won me over. [read review] 3/4
--James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
external link"Seabiscuit" the movie gets it right - not only providing exciting, saddle's-eye-view racing scenes, but also recalling the Depression era when "the Biscuit" came from behind and gave the suffering nation hope. [read review] 3/4
--Jami Bernard (New York Daily News)
external linkDirector Gary Ross yearns to make this saga of the racehorse who transfixed Depression America into a Hollywood classic. But unlike the awkward real-life Seabiscuit, his version is pretty -- and lacks a soul. [read review]
--Charles Taylor (Salon)
external linkIn the end, “Seabiscuit” runs about 15 minutes too long, and doesn’t quite muster the inspirational punch that the story allows. However, the film remains a story well told, with humanity to spare. [read review] 3/4
--Jamey Hughton (MovieViews)
external linkIt is a drama that is as caring as it is inspirational, and after weeks of big budget action films, calling this movie anything less than refreshing would be a major understatement. [read review] A
--Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)
external linkSeabiscuit may be one of the only "different" stories Hollywood has had to offer this summer, but it surely is no different than any other formula story [read review] C
--Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
external linkWonderful, heart-warming film with terrific performances from Maguire, Cooper and Bridges – expect this to rack up an Oscar nod or two. [read review] 5/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
external linkOverly-lengthy, but nonetheless rewarding if you're willing to stick with it. [read review] 8/10
