John Lithgow in Shrek (2001)

JOHN LITHGOW (Lord Farquaad) is an award-winning star of stage, screen and television. In recent years, he has become a favorite of television audiences for his starring role on the hit sitcom "3rd Rock From the Sun." Lithgow's hilarious portrayal of Dick Solomon, the commander of a group of hapless aliens, has brought him numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, three Emmy Awards and two additional Emmy nominations.

Lithgow first gained national prominence with his portrayal of Roberta Muldoon in the 1982 film "The World According to Garp," for which he earned an Academy Award® nomination, and won the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics Awards for Best Supporting Actor. The following year, he garnered another Best Supporting Actor Oscar® nomination for his work in "Terms of Endearment." His other film credits include "All That Jazz," "Blow Out," "Twilight Zone: The Movie," "Footloose," "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai," "2010," "Santa Claus: The Movie," "Harry and the Hendersons," "Memphis Belle," "At Play in the Fields of the Lord," "Raising Cain," "Cliffhanger," "A Good Man in Africa," "Princess Caraboo," "The Pelican Brief' and "A Civil Action."

A Harvard graduate and Fulbright scholar, Lithgow studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, before starting his career on the New York stage. In 1973, he won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his performance in "The Changing Room." He has also been Tony-nominated for his roles in "Requiem for a Heavyweight" and "M. Butterfly." His theatre repertoire also includes the Broadway plays "My Fat Friend," "Comedians," "A Memory of Two Mondays," "Secret Service," "Anna Christie," "Once in a Lifetime," "Spokesong," "Bedroom Farce," "Division Street," "Beyond Therapy," "The Front Page," and his own one-man show, "Kaufman at Large."

Added to his awards for "3rd Rock From the Sun," Lithgow has been repeatedly honored for his work on television. This year, he received a SAG Award nomination for his performance in the title role of the Hallmark/TNT movie "Don Quixote," which he also executive produced. He also won an Emmy Award for his role on "The Doll" episode of "Amazing Stories," and earned Emmy nominations for his work in the acclaimed television dramas "The Day After," "Resting Place" and "My Brother's Keeper." His other credits include the longform projects "The Oldest Living Graduate," "The Glitter Dome," "The Last Elephant," "World War II: When Lions Roared," "Redwood Curtain" and "The Tuskegee Airmen," to name only a few.

In addition to his acting work, Lithgow has become a bestselling author for children. His first book, The Remarkable Farkle McBride, was a Publishers Weekly and New York Times bestseller and a Time Magazine Book of the Year 2000. His next book, Marsupial Sue, is due out in September. Lithgow has recently begun performing big-hall orchestra concerts for children, appearing twice at Carnegie Hall, and with the San Diego, Pittsburgh and Chicago Symphonies. In 1999, he released his first CD for children, Singin' in the Bathtub, and he will be recording his second this spring.

Lithgow's next major acting assignment will be a new musical adaptation of "Sweet Smell of Success," by John Guare and Marvin Hamlisch, due on Broadway in March 2002.
