Unbelievably, this is the first film in which Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman appear together. As previous classmates at the Pasadena Playhouse they were both voted "least likely to succeed!"
Contrarily, this is the 10th film starring both John Cusack and his mate Jeremy Piven.
Based on a John Grisham Novel, the film features a lawsuit against a gun manufacturer and not a tobacco company as depicted in the original text. This was changed due to the release of the Insider in 1999.
Bridget Moynahan and Amanda Peet also auditioned for the role of Marlee.
