Old School Reviews |
Old School is one of those films that's best enjoyed when viewed with a large, enthusiastic crowd. On the small screen, the film will likely lose some of its raucous energy - although, since the film plays like a prolonged sitcom, it might very well be even more effective at home. [read review] --David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)
“Old School” is a rowdy comedy, but it’s surprisingly not all that anything-for-a-laugh lowbrow. It’s got stuff like Ferrell streaking, an 89 year old slathered in K-Y wrestling with topless women or Andy Dick teaching “the art of the blowjob”, but for the most part the humor comes from the characters. [read review] --Kevin N. Laforest (Montreal Film Journal)
In terms of sheer belly-laugh count, this one's in the same plentiful company as "There's Something About Mary" and "Road Trip." But although there's streaking and much bawdiness, and the upstanding (if they were to watch this) would doubtless harrumph their way through the whole thing, "Old School" is not quite as gross-out as those other two films. [read review] --Desson Howe (Washington Post)
This is easily one of the most enjoyable movie-going experiences I’ve had in a long while, as not even Jackass was completely able to fill in the humor gap that was missing inside me. When I walked out of Old School, I had the great feeling of knowing that I received the laughs I had really craved for so many months. [read review] B+ --Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
...a dumb guy comedy about dumb guys by dumb guys and for dumb guys. Though somewhat limp in execution, the picture packs in nearly all the essentials of the sophomoric comedy genre, among them swearing, streaking, mooning and drinking till you puke. [read review] --Rita Kempley (Washington Post)
If the viewer's intention is to have a few laughs, this movie gets a passing grade. If you're looking for a more complete cinematic experience, Old School has a few too many absences. [read review] --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Best described as "American Pie" with a platinum Visa card, it's the incongruousness of the three old-enough-to-know-better male leads that informs the real laughs here. [read review] --Jamie Russell (BBC Films)
Unoriginal and not particularly well made, but with enough genuinely funny moments to score pass marks - which, in all fairness, is really all it sets out to achieve. [read review] 6/10 --Gary Panton (Movie Gazette)
With all of the ingredients of a successful comedy, Old School delivers laugh after laugh with a surprisingly A-list cast and an equally great soundtrack. [read review] 7/10 --Dick Douglas (Movie-Vault.com)
This is a film that people will still be laughing at twenty years from now - and unfortunately, studios will probably still be ripping it off, too. [read review] A --Larry Carroll (CountingDown)
Beer bongs! Gratuitous panty jokes! And more ass than a boy band gets! This frat romp might be dumb, but you'll wet your Dockers anyway. [read review] --Andrew O'Hehir (Salon)
It’s no Animal House, but it succeeds because it too has a touch of insane inspiration – humour that’s both perceptive and absurd. [read review] 74/100 --Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
This is not a funny movie, although it has a few good scenes and some nice work by Ferrell as an apparently compulsive nudist. [read review] --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
So-so comedy from the director of Road Trip, redeemed by good comic performances from its oddly-matched central trio. [read review] --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
Old School rocks. It's one of the funniest flicks you will see all year long, no matter what age group you fall into. [read review] A- --Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)
"Old School" doesn't even deserve to go to video and DVD. This film should go straight to landfill. [read review] --Paul Clinton (CNN Showbiz)
The saving grace of "Old School" is that it has about a dozen funny moments. [read review] --Mick LaSalle (San Francisco Chronicle)
