“The Rules of Attraction” is having a good time being bad, but it’s nowhere near as edgy as it thinks it is. It is no more gleefully depraved than Cruel Intentions, for instance. --Kevin N. Laforest (Montreal Film Journal)
Says as much about pandering early 21st century filmmaking as it does about self-indulgent college life. 42/100--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)

Indeed, "The Rules of Attraction" looks and feels like a bad imitation of "Trainspotting" without any of that film's wit or charm. --Jonathan Foreman (New York Post)
When making a film about neglected, disenfranchised youth, the easy way out is to make a neglectful, disenfranchised film. Supposedly this reflects the careless attitude of its subject matter—instead, it discredits the film. --Kyle Smith (The Movie Insider)
Deliberately tries to disgust, but really only succeeds in boring 2/10--Gary Panton (Movie Gazette)
