The part of the movie where the family hides in the basement is very similar to a scene from The War of the Worlds, in which the narrator hides in the cellar of an abandoned house. In both stories, the aliens understand doors, and attempt to open them. In The War of the Worlds, the alien opens the cellar door but does not succeed in finding the protagonist. In Signs, the alien attempts to open the basement door, but Graham holds it shut.
