Former Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy portrays Smith, an atheist cop on the case of a serial killer whose slayings have a slender connection to the Catholic Church. A sick daughter and the loss of a partner for which he feels partly responsible add to Smith's daily burdens. When the killer gets a little too close for comfort, however, the line between the haunted detective's personal beliefs and professional life is blurred and everything he knows and understands is suddenly called into question.
