Genre: Comedy, World War I, Cult Classic, Love Triangle
Tagline: A Tragedy of the Great War
Plot: This World War I fantasy/drama follows Lt. John Boles, a decorated Canadian soldier who travels to Russia where he happens upon a woman who may or may not be his dead fiancee. The woman is plagued with amnesia and has another suitor with a similar affliction. Such an implausible oddity is standard for Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin. His direction of this parody utilizes stylized sets and early filmmaking techniques that could fool the uninitiated into believing that ARCHANGEL, released in 1990, is actually a lost film from the early sound era. This unusual war epic may play out as a melodrama, but an unassuming sense of humor gives it the air of a comedic cult classic. Also included is the 6-minute short THE HEART OF THE WORLD, perhaps Maddin's most acclaimed work.
