David Hare, leftist playwright gone director-screenwriter, was born in Sussex England where attended Lancing College and Jesus College. Each of his films more fully demonstrates the writer-director's technical growth and artistic polish. His film "Wetherby", a dark tale about suicide in an English village was widely acclaimed. "Wetherby" received the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Additional film credits include: "Saigon-Year of the Cat" 1983; "Plenty" 1985; "Wetherby" 1985; "Paris By Night" 1988 and "Strapless."

"Strapless" is Hare's third feature film and is thematically consistent with eariler pictures concerned with middle-aged professional women's lives.
