Mark Ruffalo in Last Castle, The (2001)

MARK RUFFALO (Yates) earned widespread acclaim for his performance in the independent film "You Can Count on Me," written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. In addition to the film's many honors, including the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, Ruffalo won the Best Actor award at the Montreal Film Festival, and received the New Generation Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. His work in the film also brought him a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

Ruffalo next stars in John Woo's "Windtalkers," a World War II action drama about the Navajo code talkers, slated for release in November 2001. His upcoming films also include "A View From The Top," in which he stars with Gwyneth Paltrow, and the independent feature "XX/XY."

Among his other film credits are "Committed," with Heather Graham, which screened at last year's Sundance Film Festival, Ang Lee's "Ride With The Devil," and "54." Ruffalo has also had leading roles in a variety of independent films, including Joan Micklin Silver's "A Fish In The Bathtub," "Life/Drawing," "Safe Men" and "The Last Big Thing." Additionally, he both wrote and co-starred in "The Destiny of Marty Fine," which was the first runner-up at the 1995 Slamdance Film Festival.

On television, Ruffalo has starred in such cable movies as Lifetime's "On The Second Day of Christmas," opposite Mary Stuart Masterson, and TNT's "Houdini." He also had a starring role in the drama series "The Beat," created by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana.

Ruffalo first gained attention on the New York stage for his performance in the critically acclaimed off-Broadway production of "This Is Our Youth," written by Kenneth Lonergan, for which he won the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Actor. He has performed in more than 30 plays, most recently in the off-Broadway production "The Moment When," written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner James Lapine. In addition to his acting, he co-wrote and directed the play "Margaret," at the Hudson Backstage Theatre in Los Angeles.
