This storybook tale soon turns from the perfect love story to a harrowing mystery. Patrick is a loving husband and father who leads a comfortable life amoung his country club friends, but beneath is a criminal who betrays trusts and steals dreams without conscience. When finally exposed for using university funds for his own purpose, Patrick's guilt and embarrassment leads him to an apparent suicide. His body is never recovered. Elizabeth not only has the trauma of losing her beloved husband, but she is left virtually penniless. Despite her struggles, Elizabeth eventually becomes a successful leader within her community.
