From iconoclastic British director Nicolas Roeg comes this brutal allegory about the dissolution of relationships, personal and political.
As the Romanian government crumbles, a group of well-to-do acquaintances in Bucharest congregate at physician Daniel Pavenic's home.
There, he tells them the story of how he blackmailed his sullenly beautiful cook for sexual favors in return for treating her ill husband.
Pavenic's other guests, in turn, reveal their most intimate secrets and, thus, uncover a litany of emotional malevolence.
That is, until the whirlwind outside comes crashing in.

Acclaimed director Nicholas Roeg (Walkabout, The Man Who Fell To Earth) tells a lively tale of power, passion and obsession, set in a politically torn Eastern European country. With violence raging in the streets below, Dr. Daniel Pavenic (Michael Gambon) hosts a dinner for three old school chums. At this lavishly decadent banquet the host introduces a mysterious servant to his guests, revealing the story of how he ruined the life of this strong and beautiful woman (Sonia Braga). The revelation leads to a confessional for Pavenic and his guests changing their lives forever.
