British Filmmaker Derek Jarman was born in England in 1942. His avant-garde films focus on -- in a profoundly personal way -- issues confronting the gay community. Jarman's work is influenced by Jean Cocteau, Kenneth Anger and Ken Russell.

The director was trained in the fine arts and made his first super-8 shorts while working as a designer on Russell's "The Devils" (1971) and "Savage Messiah" (1972). In 1976 Jarman made his first feature film, "Sebastiane," a homoerotic portrait of the Christian saint.

Jarman's most comprehensive film, "Caravaggio," made in 1986, stylistically renders the life-story of a painter contemplating the contradictions between his religious beliefs and his sexual identity. According to Jarman, Caravaggio, who painted a St. John, used a model with whom he had sexual relations.
